Sylvia Emilene A. Baker, 79, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on September 19, 2026. Emilene was a beloved wife, stepmother, daughter, aunt, sister, and friend whose life was marked by faith, love of family, and a gentle spirit.

Emilene was the beloved wife of Kenneth Baker, with whom she shared many years of marriage and memories. She treasured her family and especially enjoyed the time she spent connecting with her, stepdaughter, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Family was an important part of Emilene’s life, and she found joy in the simple moments of being together, sharing conversations, and staying connected to those she loved.

Emilene was a woman of faith who believed in Jesus Christ and found comfort and hope in her relationship with Him. She enjoyed listening to gospel music and was reminded through music of God’s love and faithfulness. Her faith was a meaningful part of who she was and provided a foundation of hope throughout her life. As Scripture reminds us, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25).

Emilene had an appreciation for the beauty found in God’s creation. She especially loved the fall season and the beautiful colors that came with it. She also enjoyed reading and creating flower arrangements, finding beauty and joy in the simple things around her. Her love of flowers and fall colors seemed to reflect the gentle beauty she brought into the lives of those around her. Emilene and her husband, Ken, enjoyed traveling and riding their motorcycles through the beautiful blue ridge mountains.

Emilene will be remembered for her love of family, her faith, her appreciation for beauty, and the quiet ways she stayed connected to the people she loved. She leaves behind memories that will continue to be treasured by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Baker; her mother, Ardine Akers, her brothers, L. Edward Akers and John B. Akers; her sister Bonnie Firebough; stepdaughter Kimberly, grandchildren, Evelyn Hartz, Elizabeth, Charlie, and Michael George and great grandchildren Makayla and Madison Hartz; her numerous nieces and nephews and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her immensely.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Akers, and her sisters, Betty Jo, and Judith Akers. Although her family grieves her passing, they take comfort in knowing that Emilene’s faith has brought her home to be with her Savior. Emilene’s family will remember her especially when the leaves begin to change, when gospel music fills the room, when flowers are arranged with care, and during family gatherings. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew her. Her family gives thanks to God for the life she lived, the love she gave, and the memories she leaves behind.

Funeral services will be held at Antioch Church of the Brethren 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2026. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
