Callaway

Homer David Thurman, 82, of Franklin County, Virginia, was called home on October 18, 2026. He was born on January 27, 1944, on a tobacco farm in Franklin County, the youngest of nine children to Homer and Mary Thurman. There they learned to work hard and rely on each other. Even though he missed a lot of school due to health problems, he graduated from Franklin County High School and went on to get a degree in mechanical engineering from VA Western. After working in a valve factory, he decided to enlist in the US Navy. He was placed in the nuclear program where he served on a cruiser off the coast of Vietnam. Then he enlisted in the Navy Reserves and then he joined the National Guard, where he served 15 years teaching map navigation and as a rifle instructor.
When his Navy career was completed, he returned home and worked in plumbing and electrical, then began his career as a maintenance mechanic at Burrows Printing factory. Burrows later became Standard Register. He faithfully worked there until he retired.
He was a loving father and grandfather spending most of his time with his beloved family and friends. He would help them with anything they needed, but mostly loved just spending time with them, talking, laughing, and playing games like Checkers, Chess, and Cribbage. When he wasn’t spending time with family he loved to read suspense novels.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Mary; brothers, Donald and Dewy; sisters, Iris, Lealda (Sis), Mildred, and Juanita.
He is survived by his sister, Pauline Finn; daughter, Dinah Thurman; son, Nathan (Libby) Thurman; grandchildren, Araya, Will, and Matt; and lifelong friend, Butch Jensen.
The family would like to thank Fork Mountain Assisted Living Facility for the friendships made with David by the staff and residents.
Services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2026. Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
