Loal-Mae Jamison Potter
Loal-Mae Jamison Potter of Rocky Mount, Virginia, passed peacefully on September 18, 2023, at age 95. She was born to Samuel Walter and Era Bondurant Jamison on May 23,1928, living most of her childhood and teenage years in the Snow Creek Community. Shortly after graduating from Rocky Mount High School in 1945, she met her future husband, Moses Eugene (Gene) Potter, marrying eight months later on May 24, 1946. Loal-Mae was a talented seamstress, working in the Alterations Department of Leggett in Rocky Mount and later opening Alterations by Loal-Mae, also in Rocky Mount. She retired at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Her business would not have been as successful if not for her wonderful friend and faithful co-worker for over 30 years, Phyllis Thurman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Mac McLeod, and her nephew, Barry Newman. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Goldie Potter and her daughter, Yolanda Shively; five grandchildren, Tiffany Allen (Raine Schmidt), Nikki Custer (Brad), Kirk Shively, Olivia Guilliams (Chris) and Amber Eppard (Courtney); eight great grandchildren, Lauren McGhee, Kurdt Shively, Brooke McGhee (Ridge Adkins), Baine Shively, Eva, Anna and Isla Custer, and Camryn Eppard; nephew, Colin Newman; and brother-in-law, Hoover Potter. Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2023 with Elder Carl Terry and Rev. Eric Winn officiating. Interment will follow in the Potter Family Cemetery. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A special thank you to Nicole, Michaela, Tim and Jewel of Legacy Hospice for their care of Mom and support to the family. Also, thank you to the healthcare professionals at Rocky Mount Healthcare, who tenderly cared for Mom for the last six weeks, especially Deborah and Sabrina.
