Safe Boating Week is May 22-28
SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, VA – Bridgewater Marina and Boat Rentals announced today it will direct a social media campaign aimed at promoting National Safe Boating Week, which is scheduled for May 22-28.
“This campaign runs annually just before Memorial Day weekend, which makes it an ideal time to remind boaters of safety and etiquette basics,” said Ryan Waters, Bridgewater Marina partner. “We know people are eager to get out on Smith Mountain Lake to enjoy the summer season, but it’s imperative they do so in a safe and respectful manner. That’s what these reminders are all about.”
The campaign will include daily safe boating tips and infographics shared via Bridgewater Marina’s Facebook page. Topics include tips on essential equipment to have on board, the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the importance of using weather forecasts to make safe boating decisions, and how to choose a properly fitting life jacket.
The week also marks the official launch of the 2021 Safe Boating Campaign, a yearlong initiative designed to heighten awareness of boating safety issues and promote the value of voluntary, consistent life jacket use by recreational boaters.
U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2019, and that 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets, according to the National Safe Boating Council.
“New life jackets are much more comfortable, lightweight and stylish than the bulky orange style most boaters are familiar with,” Waters said. “There are also innovative options, such as inflatable life jackets that allow mobility and flexibility for activities like boating, fishing and paddling that are much cooler in the warmer weather.”
