Community Events Planned at Ferrum College to Celebrate Earth Week 2019
Ferrum, Va. (April 15, 2019) – Ferrum College will celebrate Earth Week 2019 with community events on campus, 215 Ferrum Mountain Road, from April 23 through April 26. These events are free, open to the public, and range from cycling and birdwatching, to a community bonfire with s’mores.
“We believe that human health and well-being are inextricably linked to the health of the planet,” said Dan Caston, assistant professor of recreation and leadership at Ferrum College. “Earth Week at Ferrum College is a multi-disciplinary celebration and expression of concern and support for the planet that sustains all life as we know it.”

April 23 Events:
e-Waste: What do you do with all your old electronics? Learn ways to deal with all the e-waste that is generated by individuals, the campus community, and our society. Bring your e-waste for recycling and proper disposal.
When: Tuesday, April 23, 1 – 2 p.m.
Where: Panther’s Den
Beach Volleyball Tournament: Bring your own ball or check one out at the YMCA on the College’s campus.
When: Tuesday, April 23, 5:30 p.m.
Where: Sand volleyball court next to Susannah Wesley Hall
April 24 Events:
Cycling Event and Bike Demo: Try out some of Roanoke Mountain Adventure’s sweet rides.
Bike Demo: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: Quad in front of Franklin Hall
Group Rides: Wednesday, April 24, 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. (two rides)
Where: Meet at GoodWheel Cycling Center next to YMCA
Community Bonfire: Gather with friends and family around the campfire for an evening of s’mores, lemonade, and music. Bring a flashlight.
Time: Wednesday, April 24, 7 – 9 p.m.
Where: Meet at the fire ring just beyond the Thoreau cabin or at the Burrows-Skeens Tennis Complex picnic shelter and follow the signs.
Night with the Stars: Explore the night sky, the constellations and the myths and stories we have created to explain them. Join us to play intergalactic games and enjoy out of this world snacks.

Where: Quad in front of Franklin Hall
April 25 Events:
Morning Bird Watching Walk: Join master birder Dr. Todd Frederickson on a bird watching tour of campus. Binoculars provided.
When: Thursday, April 25th, 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.
Where: Hart International Plaza
Panther Fun Run: Come out for a fun run around campus. Cash prizes for first, second, and third place finishers.
Time: Thursday, April 25, 5 – 6 p.m.
Where: Hank Norton Center
April 26 Event:
Butterfly Bonanza: Celebrate and learn about butterflies and their critical role as pollinators. Fly a butterfly kite and plant flower seeds. Each participant will receive a pollinator seed package to take home.
Time: Friday, April 26, 4 – 6 p.m.
Where: Meet at the Quad in front of Franklin Hall
