Betty Kirk Plybon

March 12, 1932 – January 2, 2025

Betty Kirk Plybon, known to many as Betty Marie, died on Thursday, January 2, 2025, in Rocky Mount, VA. She was born in Franklin County, VA, the daughter of John Taylor Kirk and Callie Gregory Kirk. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband, Glynn S. Plybon, daughter, Arlene Hope Plybon, sister, Claudine Law, brother, Emerson Kirk, and son-in-law, Michael Damon.

Betty grew up on a family farm in Franklin County and helped her family grow tobacco and other crops. She attended school in Franklin County, temporarily pausing her education to work at the local Dupont factory, before ultimately obtaining her GED. Betty married the love of her life, Glynn, in 1952, and they moved to Falls Church, VA where she spent the majority of her adult life. In the 1960s, Betty worked as a secretary for the US Army at the Harry Diamond Laboratories and at the Fairfax County Health Department. Betty was also a homemaker and was always busy cooking delicious southern meals or working on her many crafts and hobbies. She was a prolific needleworker, tackling innumerable embroidery and cross-stitch projects, as well as sewing clothes for her daughters and even their Barbie dolls. Betty also loved bird watching and flowers and would take time to appreciate nature during her many long walks that she continued into her nineties. Some of her other hobbies included crossword puzzles, photography, China painting, and playing FreeCell on the computer.

Above all else, Betty was devoted to her family, always putting others before herself to make sure those she loved had the best lives possible. When her daughter, Arlene, fell ill later in life, Betty acted as a faithful caregiver, constantly staying by her side and ensuring she received the best care possible. Betty was the embodiment of love, selflessness, strength, and hope, and someone who touched the lives of everyone she encountered.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Wanda Plybon Damon; grandchildren, Amanda and Andrew Damon; sister, Reva Bratton; brothers, Ben (Lucy), James (Frances), Arlen, Carl (Aldine) and Gerald (Betty) Kirk.
