Luther Wayne Wingfield

April 27, 1951 – December 5, 2024

Luther “Wayne” Wingfield, age 73, of Rocky Mount, peacefully passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2024, surrounded by his family and friends.

Wayne was born in Martinsville to the late Alfred (Melton) and Edith (Mitchell) Wingfield. He graduated in 1969 from Drewry Mason High School, where he was an active participant in athletics, playing basketball and football.

In 1974, Wayne began his career at Centel, which would later become CenturyLink, where he worked for 40 years. His dedication and hard work was evident throughout the years, and he retired in 2012 after a long and distinguished career.

Wayne moved to Rocky Mount in 1977, where he became well known within the community for his work and his passion for motorcycles. He was an avid motorcyclist, and in 2014, after retiring, he embarked on a solo motorcycle trip across the country. Over 54 days, he visited 48 states and traveled more than 18,000 miles. This trip marked the beginning of many adventures, with Wayne continuing to travel across the U.S., and to Canada, visiting friends and making new memories along the way. In 2017, he fulfilled another dream by riding a motorcycle through Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Italy for nine days.

Wayne was also an active member of the Snow Creek Masonic Lodge No. 90, where he had been a member since 2012, achieving the sublime degree of Master Mason.

In addition to his love for motorcycles, Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, bowling in leagues from 1972 until this summer, and hunting.

He was a big man with a huge heart, always offering to help others.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Edith Wingfield, and his brother, Rodney Wingfield.

Wayne is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Gammons and one grandson, Silas Gammons, all of Bassett. He is also survived by his brothers Durwood of Iva SC, and Randall (Penny) of Statesville, NC, sisters Sabrina Biddle of Wilmington, NC, and Stacey (Andy) Johns of Knightdale, NC, eight nieces and nephews; and his dear friend, Rob Jones of Leland, NC.

Wayne’s adventurous spirit, kindness, and love of life will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Carilion Hospice for the amazing care they provided him and to all the friends and family who have provided support to us during this time.

A memorial service will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2024 with Rev. Chris Bennett officiating. His family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
