Ken Major
Ken Major, age 84 of Union Hall, holding his wife’s hand and surrounded by his loving family, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 10, 2024 at his home. He was born in Martinsville, VA on May 1, 1939 and was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Laurie Turner; father, Harlan W. Major; brother, Jerry Major and sister, Betty Grey. Surviving are his wife, Rita Law Major; daughters, Tammy Major Woods (Steve), Vikeesa Major Stultz (John) and Kelly Major Carver; step-children, Kathy Raab, Karen Thurman, Kristie Thurman and Richard Thurman; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He graduated from Martinsville High School in 1957 and remained a devoted Martinsville Bulldogs fan. Ken served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 until 1961 as a Second Class Petty Officer, was a proud member of the Cryptologic Association and was stationed in Guam and Pearl Harbor. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement as a Postmaster of Union Hall Post Office with over 30 years of service.
Ken was an avid sports fan, his favorite teams being the Duke Blue Devils, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2024 with Pastor Derek Layman and Minister Wayne Keith officiating. Interment will follow in Forrest Hill Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made in Ken’s memory to the VFW Post 10840 (c/o Kenneth C. Barron Jr., 1005 Sawmill Road, Ferrum, VA 24088) or to any Veteran’s organization. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
