Five Set to Join Ferrum Sports Hall of Fame
FERRUM, Virginia — Ferrum College has announced its Alumni Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2019 and five individuals will be inducted. Included in the group are two former football players, the College’s first-ever women’s lacrosse inductee, a former men’s basketball player and a former women’s cross country runner.
Cleive Adams ’92 of Danville, Virginia, played football at Ferrum from 1987-89. He was a member of 1988 Ferrum team that won the NCAA Div. III South Region title and advanced to NCAA semifinals. Adams began his coaching career at Ferrum as assistant coach from 2002-04 before moving on to become assistant football coach at Washington and Lee University from 2005-06. He returned to Ferrum as Defensive Coordinator in 2007 and remained on the Panther staff through 2013. Adams was named head football coach at Averett University in 2014 and in his first five seasons with Cougars, has coached 37 All-Conference, 23 All-State, five All-Region and five Academic All-District selections. He has also coached three Aztec Bowl participants, two All-America selections, one Conference Player of the Year, one State Rookie of the Year and one D3 Senior Classic participant.
Carrie Conques ’03 of Fairfax, Virginia, played women’s soccer and lacrosse four years each at Ferrum from 1999-2003. She was Ferrum’s soccer Offensive Player of the Year in 2001 and team captain in 2003. Concues started every game but one during her lacrosse career, posting 150 career points on 137 goals and 13 assists. At the time of her graduation, she held records for game, season and career points, as well as game, season and career goals. She was Ferrum’s lacrosse team captain in 2002 and 2003, and the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Conques earned USA South first team All-Conference in 2001 and 2002, and second team in 2003. She was also named to the USA South All-tournament Team in 2001 and 2002. After graduation, she began her teaching career at St. Marks Elementary School in Vienna, Virginia. Since 2009, Conques has been a physical education teacher at Blessed Heart Sacrament School in Alexandria, Virginia. She has coached soccer and lacrosse at her alma mater, Paul IV Catholic School in Fairfax the past six years as varsity head coach. Conques has also coached the Cardinal Girls Elite Lacrosse Club.
Mason Lockridge ’61 of Luray, Virginia, played football at Ferrum in 1959 and baseball from 1960-61. He also competed with the school’s club volleyball team. Lockridge went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1963 and his Master’s degree from University of Virginia in 1969. He served in the United States Navy from 1955-59, then worked for the Virginia Department of Social Service from 1961-63 and the Page County Public School system from 1963-2001. He was awarded the Lord Fairfax CC Medallion of Recognition Award and in 1969, and was a charter member and treasurer of the Luray Volunteer Rescue Squad. Lockridge’s other honors include being named the 1968 Luray Jaycee of the Year and 1976 Luray Ruritan Club Member of the Year. He served in 2004 on the Page County Board of Supervisors, where he held the rolr of chairman in 2005. Lockridge also served from 1980-84 as a member of the Virginia High School League Executive Committee and Chairman of Group A.
Dr. Quincy Quick ’94 of Nashville, Tennessee, played men’s basketball at Ferrum from 1992-94. Quick helped the Panthers win 1992 Dixie Conference regular season and tournament titles, as well as 1993 Dixie regular season title. He was the starting point guard on Ferrum’s team that advanced to the second round of the 1992 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. It was the first and remains the only NCAA Tournament appearance for the Panthers. Quick earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1994 from Ferrum in just three years, then went on to earn his Master’s degree in Biology from Virginia State University. Quick’s hunger for education eventually led him to earn his Ph.D. in Biology from New Mexico State University. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Tennessee State University. Quick also served as E.E. Just Endowed Professor of Biology at Grambling State University, as well as a faculty member at Southern University at New Orleans. Quick completed postdoctoral studies at University of Massachusetts Medical School, Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Toronto.
Julie Burton Stevens ’03 of Waynesboro, Virginia, ran cross country at Ferrum from 1999-2002. She earned All-Conference honors and Academic All-Conference honors from the USA South Athletic Conference in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. She was an U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association All-Academic Team selection in 1999. Stevens earned Conference Rookie of the Week honors three times in 1999, winning an individual titles at the 2019 Hampden-Sydney Invitational, 2000 Methodist Invitational, 2000 Averett Invitational and 2001 Averett Invitational. She helped Ferrum earn USA South team runner-up finishes in 2000, 2001, 2002. She served as team captain in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and closed out her Ferrum career by winning the 2003 Ferrum President’s Cup. Stevens went on to earn her Master’s degree in Public Health from Virginia Tech in 2006, then became Athletic Director at Kate Collins Middle School in Waynesboro in 2012, a position she continues to hold. She has also served as a Physical Education/Health Teacher at Kate Collins Middle School since 2005, and has been serving as Head Boy’s & Girl’s Cross Country Coach at Waynesboro High School and Kate Collins MS since 2008. She served as Physical Education Teacher and Head Girl’s Track Coach at Page County High School from 2004-05, as well as Physical Education/Health Teacher at Peter Muhlenburg Middle School in Woodstock, Virginia, from 2003-04. Stevens’ honors include the Community Foundation of Central Blue Ridge’s 2017-18 Dawbarn Award, and the 2013-14 Kate Collins Middle School Teacher of the Year Award.
All five individuals will be enshrined during Ferrum’s Alumni Sports Hall of Fame ceremony and luncheon Saturday, Sept. 21, prior to Ferrum’s 1:00 p.m. football game against Averett University. The ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. in Franklin Hall’s Blue Ridge Mountains Room on the Ferrum campus.
