W. Glenn Turman

January 31, 1934 — August 29, 2026

W. Glenn Turman, 92, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2026, at his home. He now rests in the arms of Jesus, playing his guitar and making sweet bluegrass music.

Glenn was born January 31, 1934, in Rocky Mount to Charlie and Ruth Lavinder Turman. His beloved wife of 51 years, Peggy Alice Chitwood Turman, preceded him in death on December 11, 2008.

Glenn’s first job was working at the silk mill in Rocky Mount for 19 cents an hour. From 1966 to 1969, he served as a patrolman for the Town of Rocky Mount. He then owned a dump truck and hauled loads from 1968 to 1973. He returned as a patrolman for the Town of Rocky Mount from 1972 to 1974.

After working various side jobs hauling milk for Paul Guilliams and Eugene Akers, Glenn became a full-time employee with Akers Trucking in 1975. His career hauling milk continued until his retirement in February 1999. During his years with Akers Trucking, he picked up milk, drove tractor-trailers, and eventually became the office manager. After Eugene retired, Glenn continued to work for Melvin Hunt, who purchased Akers Trucking, for another five years.

Even in retirement, Glenn loved to stay busy. He drove tour buses up and down the East Coast, enjoying the opportunity to meet and spend time with the many people who rode as his passengers.

Glenn and Peggy loved to travel and took their two daughters on many summer vacations to different states. They also camped along the Blue Ridge Parkway many, many times. Some of their fondest memories were made around the radio and later the television on Sunday afternoons, listening to NASCAR. There were also many trips to the racetracks with family and friends.

The most important part of Glenn’s life was his faith. He loved God and was a faithful member of Gogginsville Methodist Church. He and Peggy were also members of Gideons International and enjoyed participating in that ministry.

Glenn was very proud of his friends in the bluegrass music community. He began playing at campgrounds on weekends and later played with The Furnace Creek Band in addition to the Dairy Queen at the Route 40 West location. He enjoyed attending bluegrass events at Dominion Valley, and Waidsboro. Nothing was allowed to interfere when it was time to “play music.” He especially loved the red shirt Dairy Queen gave him to wear while he played in the band. His picture was even displayed at the Southwest Cultural Center in Abingdon, showing him playing his guitar with the band.

In addition to his wife and parents, Glenn was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Edsel Foley; son-in-law David R. Cundiff, brother-in-law, Bobby Moyer; and great-grandson, Granger Creech.

Glenn is survived by his two daughters and son-in-law, Debbie Creech and husband Stephen, and Tina Cundiff; grandchildren, Shaun Foley, Ethan Cundiff and wife Ashley, Ashley Fink and husband Mike, and Timothy Creech and wife Amanda; and six great-grandchildren, Bella Creech, Tucker Creech, Caroline Fink, Dallas Cundiff, Elorie Creech, and Cecelia Fink. He is also survived by his sister, Faye Turman Moyer; nephew, Carl Moyer; sister-in-law, Edith Perdue and partner Charles; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Glenn was fortunate to have many special friends throughout his life and was especially grateful for the companionship of Nancy Prillaman. He considered his bluegrass band family, and they considered him family as well.

Glenn’s family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the love, friendship, and many acts of kindness shown to him throughout the years as he enjoyed playing his guitar and singing tenor at events throughout the area.

Family night will be Monday, August 31st from 5 to 7 pm. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 1, at 2:00 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery at Gogginsville Methodist Church.
