![]() ![]() ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Raising the Shade: Franklin County, 1850–1910 brings to light the lives and service of 70 Franklin County-born men who enlisted in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. Through historical research, public education, and community collaboration, this Franklin County NAACP project explores their contributions to emancipation, the preservation of the Union, and the continuing pursuit of equality and citizenship. Presenters will share the story of the two-year initiative and the creation of Virginia’s first monument dedicated collectively to Franklin County’s United States Colored Troops. The program will also examine how the project is preserving an often-overlooked chapter of local history while creating opportunities for education, reflection, and community healing. Raising the Shade was supported by the Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia project, funded by the Mellon Foundation and administered through Virginia Tech.
