Delmas “Del” Linwood Smith

February 23, 1947 — July 1, 2026

Delmas L. Smith (“Del”), age 79, passed away on July 1, 2026. He was born on February 23, 1947, in Lexington, Virginia.

Del graduated from Jefferson High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1965 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1991. In 2010, he retired from the Virginia Employment Commission and settled in Franklin County, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Levi Smith; his step-father, Joe Glass; his mother, Virginia Smith Glass; his sister, Janice Kimberlin; and his great-niece, Ravyn Noel Benham.

Del is survived by his wife of 20 years, Barbara Whitt Weeks Smith; his daughter, Michele Beall; and his sons, Michael and Christopher. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Doris Chatting (Roger); his brother, Charlie Smith (Susan); and his wonderful church family at Snow Creek Christian Church.

Del was known as a joker and a prankster who loved making others laugh, a trait he seemed to have inherited from his mother. He was an avid lover of Southern Gospel music and, as he would often say, “tried” to sing with church choirs and other groups.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Snow Creek Christian Church with Pastor Scott Oliver officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Snow Creek Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. The family will be there to greet relatives and friends.

The family requests that those wishing to express their sympathy consider making memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, to Snow Creek Christian Church, 4970 Snow Creek Road, Martinsville, VA 24112, or to The Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131, or online at The Parkinson’s Foundation.
