Alan Leroy Shaffer

September 2, 1933 — March 18, 2026

Alan “Pete” Leroy Shaffer, 92, of Glade Hill, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. He was born in a rural farm country in RD#1, Elysburg, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1933.

Pete proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police soldier responsible for law enforcement, crime prevention, and battlefield security. Following his service to his country, he worked alongside his father, Charlie, in carpentry and farming. Together, they also contributed their skills to building homes at Knoebels. Pete later worked as a millwright installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and dismantling heavy industrial machinery and equipment at the Cool Whip Factory in Avon, New York.

A highly skilled woodworker and master craftsman, Pete found great joy in crafting pieces that his beloved wife, Dotty, would lovingly paint. Their shared creativity brought beauty into the lives of many becoming keepsakes for many families.

Pete cherished simple pleasures, including his weekly phone calls with his nephew, Ray Minnick. The two shared a love of television programs about old tractors and could spend hours talking and laughing together.

He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 65 years, Dorothy Ellen (Mentch) Shaffer, who passed away on May 5, 2017, at the age of 82. He was also preceded in death by their two infant daughters, born in 1956 and 1960, lovingly remembered as Baby Shaffer One and Baby Shaffer Two.

Pete and Dorothy were active members of the Halesford Baptist Church for more than 20 years and many of his best times were spent with church members which he considered part of his family. Pete is remembered by extended family, including the Mentch family, and by all who knew and loved him.

No public services are immediately planned for Pete, with the family encouraging personal and private memories. A memorial service is scheduled for a later date at the Blue Church located in Paxinos, Pennsylvania.
