Ralph “Gene” Craighead

July 14, 1946 — November 12, 2025

Ralph “Gene” Craighead, 79 of Callaway, VA went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 14, 1946 to the late Ralph and Trudy Craighead. He is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Linda Craighead, Everette Craighead, Carol Hodges and James Craighead. He is survived by the love of his life of 57 years, Joy Craighead, and by his children, son Scott (Teresa) Craighead, son Brent (Carole) Craighead, and daughter Tisha (Cameron) Brubaker. He was devoted to his family and left behind a legacy in his 8 grandchildren: Sheilla Reed, Simone (Gary) Alli, Dakota Wilson, Tyler Brubaker, Savannah Wilson, Austin Wilson, Ryan Brubaker and Samantha Craighead, as well as great grandson, Alex Reed.

Gene was a veteran, who proudly served his country in the US Army and retired from Yokahama Tire in 2008. He spent much of his time outdoors, where he loved building and fixing things and raising all kinds of animals over the years. His life’s calling was his pastoral ministry and mission work with the American Rescue Workers, where he left an impression in countless lives. Gene never met a stranger and even during his illness, he remained positive and his faith in his Savior was an encouragement to others.

His family would like to express sincere thanks to ACG Hospice, and especially Sally and Jazz, who took exceptional care of him. He referred to Sally as his “angel”.

Throughout Gene’s illness, the family appreciated all the thoughts and prayers from so many. We rejoice in Gene’s healing and find assurance in Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2025. Interment will follow in Callaway Community Cemetery. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
