Julie Laws Sullivan

November 2, 1958 – January 24, 2025

Julie Laws Sullivan, 66, of Penhook, Va., unexpectedly departed her earthly home on January 24, 2025. She was born on November 2, 1958, in Granite Falls, N.C., to the late Estelle and Willard Amos Laws, Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by in death by her beloved brother, Willard Amos Laws, Jr.

She was the founder of an industrial maintenance service encompassing a variety of commercial Class A properties, universities, government facilities, and airports spanning multiple states. Julie proudly managed the business for more than 35 years, until her recent retirement in December 2024.

Julie was married to Dan Sullivan and cherished every moment together. She loved her home and described being blessed to have “paradise in her backyard”. Julie and Dan relished evenings on their boat watching the sunset; Dan will proudly tell you he captained 100+ hours within the last year. Julie loved tending to her pets and koi pond, and she used her green thumb to garden and care for the orchids in her greenhouse. She also delighted in taking her late brother’s vintage truck for a spin around the neighborhood.

She devoted her life to loving the Lord and her family. Her children and extended family brought her immense joy, and she graciously did all she could to provide for them. Julie was incredibly kind and generous to everyone she encountered, whether it was buying groceries for a stranger or treats for the church. When you met her, you were immediately greeted with a huge smile and an even bigger heart.

As a member of Christ Community Church, she faithfully served on the Governing Council as treasurer. In addition, she volunteered with their Mobile Food Pantry and made visits to the VA home in Salem, Va. Julie adored her church family and loved participating in her Bible Study group.

Julie is survived by two sons: Steven Combs and his wife Shannon, of Forest, Va., and Robert Combs and his wife Whitney, of Charlotte, N.C. She was a dedicated Nana to four grandchildren: Jaeleigh Combs; and Colin, Kathryn and Brendan Sullivan.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2025, at Christ Community Church with Pastor Derek Layman officiating. A private interment will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
