James “Jimmy” Carl Bridges
December 24, 1956 – December 5, 2024
James “Jimmy” Carl Bridges, age 67 of Callaway, passed away peacefully at home on December 5, 2024. He was born to the late James Harvey Bridges and Shirley Magdalene Fralin on December 24, 1956.
Jimmy entered the Marines in February 1975. During his time in the Marines, he was awarded 4 Meritorious Mast for duty above and beyond what is required, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Rifle Marksman Badge. Jimmy completed his service in February 1979 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He was very proud of his service to his country and would let you know that he was a Marine at every opportunity.
After the military, Jimmy worked in the woods with his Uncle for a while before ultimately going to work for Guy Roberts until they closed. He then spent the next 17 years working for Uttermost Corporation until his health forced him to enjoy early retirement. Jimmy was an avid fisherman and took every opportunity to throw in a line and see what he could catch. When it was too cold to fish, you would find him watching football or westerns or spending time with family. There were three things Jimmy had to have –his Kool cigarettes, wrestling, and a cold Pepsi. His beloved nieces and nephews remember him as a fun loving Uncle with some of the craziest stories.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Terry Bridges (Callaway), sisters, Evonne Custer (Ferrum), Diane Pugh (Roanoke), Patricia Chernick (NC) and Cynthia Bernard (Rocky Mount), numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins especially Lacy Bridges, along with his buddies Steve Young and Jeff Taylor. He was predeceased by his parents, James Harvey Bridges and Shirley Magdalene Fralin, and his brother John Harvey Bridges.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Carilion Clinic Hospice of Franklin County who helped to provide excellent care to Jimmy in his final years. He developed a special friendship with Susan Mabe who was his hospice nurse for much of that time, and especially enjoyed the slices of homemade cheesecakes that she would bring to him.
Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 8, 2024 with Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in the Bridges Family Cemetery with Military Honors. His family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
