George William “Bill” English, Jr.

March 6, 1935 – December 13, 2024

Bill English, age 89, passed away Friday, December 13, 2024. He was born March 6, 1935, a son of the late George William English, Sr. and Hazel Shumate English. He is survived by his fiancée Sue C. Hodges, sister Pat E. Jones, niece Sarah J. Owen (Carroll) and nephew Bryan E. Jones (Stacey). Bill graduated from Franklin County High School in 1954. He worked at DuPont from 1960 to 1991. During and after his years at DuPont his passion was working on his farm. As a welder he solved most of his farm equipment problems himself. Bill was always a hard worker who believed in honest dealings and whatever work he did he wanted to do it right. Being gifted as a mechanic and as an electrician, he went all around the neighborhood helping people fix their mechanical or electrical problems of many types.

He loved his family and his multitude of cousins, and always wanted to know who anyone’s “people” were. He also loved his church family at Pleasant Hill. He trusted Jesus as his Savior in June 2014. Being a young Christian he had began to search scripture when dementia began to affect him. We know he had a peace about his soul and greater love for others through his faith. Even though he continued to use his colorful adjectives, thankfully God’s grace extends to us as God transforms each believer day by day.

The family expresses their appreciation for the care he received from the many caregivers at Fork Mountain Adult Home, especially Sarah Campbell.

His family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 4:00PM on Sunday, December 15, 2024 at Flora Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, VA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, December 16, 2024 at Pleasant Hill Church. Pastor Liz Lazenby and Pastor Henry Butler officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Pleasant Hill Church mission fund, c/o Susan Arrington, Treasurer, 90 Sherwood Lane, Rocky Mount, VA 24151. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
