Roger Eugene Budner

May 31, 1930 – October 7, 2024

Roger Eugene Budner, 94 of Hardy died at home on Monday, October 7, 2024. He was born May 31, 1930, in Bluefield, West Virginia, the son of John Budner and Mary Henderson Budner. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, John and Bob Budner. Roger graduated from Bluefield High School and attended Concord College. He served in the United States Navy and crossed the Atlantic 22 times, learning and re-learning that he did not care for ocean voyages. Returning to Bluefield, Roger began his career in legal pharmaceutical sales. His long-term business career in hospitality commenced when he bought the Brier Motel and Restaurant. In his 50’s he semi-retired, keeping his interest in Colonial Garden Apartments. Roger is survived by his beloved sons, Eric and Jay Budner and their step-mother Judith Helms Budner to whom he was married for 44 years. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Dawn and Kathleen Budner; and numerous other Budner and Helms family members; as well as his two schnauzers, Nicky and Coco Cheryl. Roger had a wry sense of humor, honed by years working the bar at the Brier. He was never at a loss for a joke. He relished his fishing trips with brothers and friends. His Scrabble skills, somewhat impaired at first, improved dramatically with years of practice. He delighted in the occasional win. Rook and O-Hello skills proved innate and he was always up for a game. Later in life—into his 90’s— he became an avid international traveler. Word has it that he wore his pith helmet on a trip in the Canadian Rockies. Unfortunately, he left the gear at home during a trip that stranded him in South Africa at the onset of Covid. Roger loved life and lived it fully. He loved and was loved deeply during his long and fruitful life. In recognition a private celebration is planned.
