Gladys Marie Gray
April 1, 1921 – September 28, 2024
Gladys Marie Gray, age 103 peacefully transitioned to Glory on September 28, 2024. She was born in Burnt Chimney, VA on April 1, 1921 to the late Fannie Mae Woody and John Oak Taylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Gray of 60 plus years; five brothers, James Wallace Patterson, Joe Delbert Patterson, William Patterson, Thomas Irvin Patterson, Lewis Patterson; four sisters, Lula Belle Taylor, Sally Taylor, Cordelia Holmes and Mary Clark; one son, Edward Gray; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; daughter in law, Debra Edwards Gray; son- in- law, John Chism. Sister Gladys was member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church then later became a member of First Baptist Church. She loved GOD first and then her children. Sister Gladys would say “when God is ready for me he will come and get me”. She loved cooking, gardening, flowers and she really enjoyed people. People were fascinated that at the age of 103 she was still able to live by herself and still had a sharp mind and memory. All of her children except the four youngest sons called her Dine. She was also known to some as RED. She leaves to cherish her memories four sons, David (Lois) Gray of Winston Salem, NC, Mark Gray of Roanoke VA, Raymond (Connie) Gray of Roanoke, VA, Billy Gray of Washington, DC; four daughters, Florine (Vandal) Muse of Rocky Mount, VA, Loline Young of Rocky Mount VA, Nancy Chism of Rocky Mount, VA, Frances Stovall of Roanoke VA; two sisters, Delores Thompson of Richmond VA and Christine Waltower of Cleveland, OH; daughter- in- law, Doris Gray of Roanoke, VA; 33 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many nephews, cousins and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted at First Baptist Church, 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 4, 2024. Interment will follow in Byrd View Cemetery. A repast will be held at Pigg River Community Center. Friends may visit 2-7 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Service. Her family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service.
