Nannie Ruth Saunders McDaniel

Nannie Ruth Saunders McDaniel, age 88 of Ferrum made her transition to her new eternal home on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. She was born in Ferrum, Virginia on September 11, 1936, to the late Aaron Saunders and Nannie Matt Gibson Saunders. Mother Ruth was united to the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church of the Piedmont Association and then to the Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church in 1960. Mother Ruth also served as Clerk for the Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church for many years. She also served as the Mother for Balcony Primitive Baptist Church for several years. Recently, Mother Ruth was acknowledged as the oldest member in membership and age within the Ephesus Association. She loved cooking and serving during church gatherings. She was known for her famous pound cake. Mother Ruth had a gift for being a caregiver to many, especially the elderly. She loved talking on the telephone to her sisters. Her nickname was Be Good! In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Hydress McDaniel; one child, Robin Inez McDaniel Wade; five brothers, John, Joe, Charles, Edward and William Saunders; five sisters, Rosie James, Bertha Wade, Irene Poindexter, Alice Adkins, and Virginia Edwards; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Dinah McDaniel of the home; one son Hydress (Denise) McDaniel of Killeen, Texas; two granddaughters, Nacina McDaniel of High Point, NC, Shanta Ferguson of Lynchburg, VA; and one grandson, Roger (Brittany) Wade Jr. of Greensboro, NC; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Shirley Jackson; four sisters-in-law, Mary McDaniel of Washington, D.C, Trenda (Curtis) Conner of Wilmington, DE, Peggy (William) Fenwick of Floyd, VA and Lera Saunders of Alexander, VA; a host of nieces and nephews; long-time special friends, Joseph (Joe) Menefee and Gwen Cummings and her great-grandchildren, Prince and Zayla; special caregivers, Ashley Honeywell and Judy Sledd; and special neighbor, Darrell Huddleston. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at Flora Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Saunders Family Cemetery. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
