James Earl Shively
May 21, 1940 – August 13, 2024
James Earl Shively, 84, of Ferrum, Virginia passed away on August 13, 2024, in Bristol, Tennessee surrounded by his family after a brief struggle with cancer. Born on May 21, 1940, in Endicott, Virginia, he will be remembered for his dedication to working hard and his enduring love for his family.
James honorably served his country in the Virginia National Guard during the 1960s with distinction and pride. In the late 1970s, he was a founding member of the Ferrum Rescue Squad serving his community in this role for more than ten years.
Professionally, James was the President of Shively & Carter Custom Crafted Cabinets, where he showcased his leadership and craftsmanship. His work not only enriched many homes but also the lives of those who worked alongside him, leaving a legacy of quality and integrity in the business community.
James loved reading World War II history, collecting Corvettes and other antique cars, travelling and spending time at the beach. He and his wife Bernice would travel to the literal ends of the earth to spend time with their beloved grandchildren.
James is preceded in death by his loving wife, Bernice Christine Smith; his parents, Bunyon and Essie Shively; his in-laws, Kyle and Gertrude Smith; his brother, Bobby Shively; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Mazel Shively; sister, Vicky Shively Fox; and sister-in-law, Zelma Boyd and her husband Monroe. He is also preceded by his nephew, Everett Wayne (Joe) Shively, Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Carmen Shively Goff; son-in-law, Chris Goff; grandchildren, Margaret, Jonathan, and Catherine Elizabeth Goff; his sister and brother-in-law, Diane and JR Smith; sister-in-law, Marie Shively; brother-in-law, Johnny Fox; brother-in-law, Watson Smith and his wife Mary Ann; sister-in-law, Darlene Hudson and her husband Mark (James’ good friend); and brother-in-law, Allen Smith and his wife Patricia. James also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Maple Grove Methodist Church in Ferrum, Virginia on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church Fellowship Hall. Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Park at 5 p.m. accompanied by an Honor Guard from the Virginia National Guard. Local announcement by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
