Larry Wayne Board

May 20, 1954 – June 9, 2024

Larry Wayne Board known to many as Archie has “gone fishing” in heaven today, June 9, 2024 to join his father, Thomas B. Board, Sr. He was 70 years old celebrating his last birthday, May 20. Larry spent most of his life living and toiling on Roundview Dairy Farm in Glade Hill, Va. Larry assisted his father and grandfather, Onley S. Board and brother, Thomas (Benny) Board Jr. with the dairy farm. They also raised tobacco for many years until they decided to leave the farm for other ventures.

Larry was an avid hunter and fisherman since his teens. He has hunted and fished most places in Franklin County. Few ponds have not seen a line cast by Larry’s rod and reel. Many childhood memories exist around the ride in the back of the truck traveling to SML with cousins to catfish or opening day trout season at Runnett Bag. Larry had a small collection of citation catches.

Larry enjoyed all types of music from Beach Music to Bluegrass. He loved to dance and sing and be at music festivals.

He often dominated the dance floor “flatfootin’ in his own style.

Larry has been surrounded by his loving family: mother Avis B. Board; brothers, Benny Board (Annette) and Jonathan Board and sisters, Janet Betterton (Kenny) and Lori McClure (Chris). His nieces and nephews, Ben Board (Jessica); Katie Holcomb (Blake); Amy Betterton; Robbie Betterton (Emily); Anna Gilje (Andrew) and Jacob McClure have held special places in his heart. He has numerous great nieces and nephews that won his loving heart.

Larry always in his helping hand way; was a master chef with his famous fried chicken and gravy which was one of his numerous menu items along with “pintos, cornbread and greens” which was one of his favorites. Larry enjoyed buying and providing for everyone whether it was bubbles for Easter, planting pumpkin seeds, golf cart rides, fishing at the pond, or sharing his bountiful garden.

He was a devoted caregiver to his mother these last few years, taking care of the garden, yard and home. He had a caring and loving heart and would drop everything to help all who asked. We will miss his “I heard that” and “good clean living” among many other phrases for years to come. He was a caring person with a big heart and loved his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2024 with Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
