George Walter “G.W.” Thurman

George Walter “G.W.” Thurman, 72, of Franklin County, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024, after a long battle with cancer, at his daughter’s house in Barboursville, VA. 

G.W. was born February 18, 1951, in Franklin County, VA, where he was raised, son to the late Walter Price and Lou Anna Smith Thurman. George graduated from Franklin County High School in 1969. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping with family, and watching NASCAR. He was a Farmall man through and through and collected antique clocks and tractors. He put in over 40 years of hard work at MW Windows.  He was a member of the local Primitive Baptist church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Price and Lou Anna Smith Thurman; and his two sisters, Norma Jean (Thurman) Fralin, and Frances (Thurman) Eubank.        

George is survived by his three loving children, Richard Thurman; Diane (Thurman) Gutierrez; Kimberly (Thurman) and her husband, Scott Hensley; his girlfriend, Judy Young; and his six grandchildren, Alexis, McKayla, Dustin, Jacob, Gregory, and Amber.

Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024 with Elder Zack Byrd and Elder Mark Terry officiating. The pallbearers are his three grandsons, Dustin and Jacob Thurman and Gregory Hensley; his great-nephew, Lucas Fralin; his friend Leroy Maclin; and Steve Manning. His graveside service will be held immediately after in the Thurman Family Cemetery on Farm View Rd. Following the graveside service there will be a reception at Woodmen of the World on 55 Woodman Rd, Rocky Mount, VA. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service at Flora Funeral Service, 665 S. Main St. Rocky Mount.
