Bruce Cecil Dungan

Bruce Cecil Dungan, age 82 of Union Hall, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023. Bruce is survived by his devoted wife, Wendie; his daughters Angela and Callie; and his son-in-law, Gene Lovell. Bruce was a member of Trinity Ecumenical Parish. Bruce was an accomplished lawyer who strived for the just treatment of all in both the public and private sector. After a successful career, he retired to live at the lake he loved. Having always enjoyed teaching water-skiers, Bruce devoted himself to volunteering for boater safety. As President of the Smith Mountain Lake Association, Bruce took action to form a Water Safety Task Force to address the dangerous boating situations on the lake. He helped create and lead the Virginia Safe Boating Alliance. His tireless work with key legislators led to the Virginia Boating Safety Education Requirement becoming law. The duration, depth, and range of his focus on boating safety for both Smith Mountain Lake and the State of Virginia led to his receiving numerous appreciation awards. Among them was the highest recognition given to a non-military person from the Commandant of the Coast Guard, the Meritorious Public Service Award. One of Bruce’s favorite past-times was making friends and putting smiles on the faces of nearly everyone he met with witty jokes.  Most of all, he cherished his family and loved being with them. There will be a private family service held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Smith Mountain Lake Association or the Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
