BFMS 8th Grader Wins District Spelling Bee Title

Rocky Mount, Va – Benjamin Franklin Middle School Eighth Grader Riley Gordon captured the 2022 Franklin County Public Schools Spelling Bee title.

Riley is a three time division champion and will represent Franklin County this year at the Roanoke Times Regional Virtual Spelling Bee in March.

Sherry Rodriguez-Lopez, a Lee M. Wade Elementary Fifth Grader, earned the division runner-up honors.

This years spelling bee lasted 6 rounds and concluded with Gordon correctly spelling “brocade” to claim the title.

“Brocade” is a noun from Spanish, Portuguese and Italian roots meaning “a rich fabric woven with a raised pattern, typically with gold or silver thread; The quilt was of a white silk brocade.”
