Winds Causing Blowing Snow as VDOT Plows Secondary Roads

SALEM – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) equipment operators continue to work in 12-hour shifts to plow and treat roads in western Virginia.

Interstates 77, 81 and 581 are in minor condition, which means they are mostly clear with isolated slick spots. Drivers should use caution and watch for icy patches, especially on ramps, bridges and overpasses. Conditions on primary roads (those numbered 1-599) are improving from snow-covered and slushy to minor condition, so drivers should expect slick spots on these routes as well.
Plowing on secondary roads and neighborhood streets (those numbered 600 and above) is underway throughout the region. These routes are covered in deep snow. Equipment operators will make as much progress as possible today on plowing these roads.
Gusty winds are causing snow to blow and drift in some areas. This may cause previously plowed roads to cover in snow again. To report debris, downed trees or other hazards on the roadway, citizens can call VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-367-ROAD (7623).
Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions and traffic incidents on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system. The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke.
