UPDATE: 12:17 p.m. – Cable 12 has learned that local authorities are searching for the suspect, perhaps in a barn at English Road and Doe Run Road in Franklin County.

UPDATE: 12:08 p.m. MON – Press Release from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 10:10 a.m. on June 28th, 2021 alerting of a shooting at the Cannaday’s Store at 24800 Virgil H Goode Highway in Boones Mill. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office
responded, along with Boones Mill Police Department, Virginia State Police and Franklin County Public Safety.
One male victim has been transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect, 55-year-old Emmitt Southern of Princeton, West Virginia, fled the scene before
law enforcement arrived. The suspect is believed to be driving an older model dark blue blazer
with West Virginia tag NBV-349 and may be traveling 220 NB or Interstate 81.
The victim and suspect knew one another so this situation is believed to be an isolated incident.
Law enforcement are actively searching for this suspect. If you see this suspect or his vehicle,
contact 911 immediately.”

UPDATE: 11:30 a.m. – A “BOLO” (be on the lookout) has been issued for a man with gray hair has seen headed north on 220 driving a older model Chevy Blazer with West Virginia tags NVB-349. The suspect is Emmitt Southern from Princeton, West Virginia. He works in Christiansburg but lives in Princeton, West Virginia. He has family in the Franklin County area. He could be headed back to West Virginia, the BOLO says.

The BOLO also says the shooting happened at 10:10 a.m. at Cannaday’s Gas Station in Boones Mill.

State Police and surrounding areas have been notified and are looking for the suspect.

BOONES MILL – There is a heavy police presence in Boones Mill in what’s described by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department as an ‘active incident’. The incident is reported to be at the 24800 block of Route 220, or Virgil Goode Highway, which is Cannaday’s Store according to Google Maps.

Cable 12 is receiving reports of a shooting at a gas station just before 11 a.m. The shooting may be a domestic incident. Rescue crews reportedly found a man with a gun shot wound laying down in the parking lot.

The sheriff’s department says there are no fatalities at this time and there is no threat to the public.

Fire and EMS crews from Franklin County Public Safety are on the scene along with mutual assistance from Clearbrook Fire and EMS. Life guard has also been alerted.

Traffic may be congested in the Boones Mill area.
