Billy Giles Pickeral
Billy Giles Pickeral, 89, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, died Monday, March 29, 2021. He was born July 31, 1931, the son of the late Raymond and Ellen Pickeral.
Surviving are his son and daughter in-law, Gary and Pam Pickeral; his daughter, Lisa Pickeral Chitwood; his granddaughters, Kristen, Lauren (Matt), Kara (Yates), Alexandra; his grandson William (Lindsey); his great grandchildren, Judson, Wells, and Catherine; his sisters, Patricia Powell (Harry), and Gladys Henson (Jim); nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Zemula Moorefield Pickeral. Also, his two brothers, Cecil and James.
Bill served in the navy during the Korean War and was proud to be a United States Veteran. He may best be remembered by many as the Chief of Police of Rocky Mount. He worked with the Rocky Mount Police Department for over 30 years and he loved the town and citizens of Rocky Mount.
Bill was an active member of Franklin Heights Church and he and Zem were charter members. Bill’s example of faith has always encouraged others and it was his utmost honor to follow God and worship Him. He simply tried to live like Christ each day.
His interests included spending time with family, hunting, fishing, bird watching, playing Rook, game shows, yard sales, and enjoying the river in his backyard.
His life, his integrity, his companionship, and his legacy were simply stellar.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2021 at Franklin Heights Church with Pastor Stan Parris officiating with Covid guidelines in place. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to “Helping Hands of Franklin County.” (540) 483-2387.
