Shaw Named Associate Head Football Coach at Ferrum
FERRUM, Virginia — Director of Athletics John Sutyak and Head Football Coach Cleive Adams have announced the promotion of J.D. Shaw to Associate Head Football Coach.
In this new capacity, Shaw will help to manage the administrative paperwork associated with the Panther football program and provide leadership in the absence of the head coach.
Shaw aids in player leadership development and coordinates all video operations for the Panthers football program. On the field he coaches Ferrum’s quarterbacks.
Since his arrival at Ferrum, the Panthers have had a number of passing records, including touchdowns, receptions and passing yards in a season. Zack Clifford played for the Panthers for two seasons under Shaw, setting single season passing and touchdown records for the Black Hats.
“J.D. has a wealth of experience that not only will help me from an administrative perspective, he will free me up to engage in more football activity on a day-to-day basis,” said Adams. “We both have been actively coaching in this region for 15 plus years and that knowledge is critical to the development and sustainability of our coaching staff.”
Shaw came to Ferrum from Bridgewater College, where he worked with the football staff as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator six seasons from 2012-17. Prior to that, he served 10 seasons from 2002-11 as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Averett University, and seven years in the same role at Waynesburg College from 1995-2002.
Shaw also served three seasons from 1993-95 as offensive coordinator at Waynesburg Central High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1993 and master’s degree in 1994, both from West Virginia University. As a student with the Mountaineers, Shaw worked as a football student coach and equipment manager.
