Flora Funeral Service Obituary: Dove Hylton McCall
Nora Dove Hylton McCall, 90, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, passed away on March 25, 2019. She was born May 6, 1928, to Charles D. Hylton, Sr. and Elsie Owen Hylton in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Douglas McCall, Sr., her son-in-law, Spencer Chang, and her daughter-in-law, Becky McCall. Also preceding her in death were her brothers and sisters, Vernon Hylton, Charles Hylton, Jr., Bobby Hylton, Dorothy Hylton Woodall, and Kathryne Hylton Strange. Dove graduated from Ferrum Junior College where she lettered in basketball and was elected May Queen. She met Doug at Ferrum at a time when all students worked, she in the college laundry and he milking cows in the dairy. They married in 1947 and moved to Blacksburg while Doug pursued his bachelor’s degree at VPI (Virginia Tech). Ferrum remained dear to their hearts and, in 1995, Doug and Dove were chosen as Outstanding Alumni. After raising her children, Dove received her bachelor’s degree from Stratford College in Danville. She taught for 16 years in the Franklin County school system before leaving to work with Doug in his insurance business. Dove is survived by her children, Vivian Chang Norkus (Joe) of Rocky Mount and John D. McCall, Jr. of Hardy; four grandchildren, Jennifer McCall Kennedy (Dave) of Roanoke, John Bradley McCall of Wirtz, Cay Lee Chang Ratliff (Chad) of Charlottesville, and Douglas Key Chang (Samantha) of Hendersonville, Tenn.; one step-granddaughter, Jaclyn Yaddow (Tim) of Roanoke; eight great-grandchildren, Tanner and Mitchell Kennedy, Spencer and Maya Ratliff, Bailey and Payton McCall, and Evie and Everett Chang. Also surviving are one sister, Hilda Hylton Blair of Danville; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Hylton, Judy Hylton, and Peggy McCall; and brother-in-law Darwyn McCall. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, dear friends and neighbors including her Rook and beach buddies, and her Rocky Mount Christian Church family. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Betty, Lynn, Bonnie, Cindy, Glenda and Joyce. A memorial service officiated by Rev. Matthew Ricks and Rev. Lee Strange, nephew, will be held at Rocky Mount Christian Church on Friday, March 29 at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Home on Thursday, March 28, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers or food, donations may be made to Rocky Mount Christian Church or the Franklin County Humane Society.
