Ferrum Posts Baseball Sweep Over Wilmington (Ohio)

FERRUM, Va. — Ferrum College picked up a pair of non-conference baseball wins this afternoon at home over Wilmington College (Ohio), winning the opener 16-5 and taking the nightcap 8-1 at Panther Field.

THE BASICS
Tim Ortega‘s three-run homer to center field in the first inning of the opener set the tone for the day. The Panthers added four runs in the fifth inning, two on Ortega’s double to left, then added one in the seventh and seven in the eighth. Starter Drew Calohan looked sharp, fanning 11 batters in six innings.
Jake Martin‘s RBI single in the bottom of the first inning put Ferrum in front for good in the nightcap. The Panthers added four runs in the fourth inning, two on Christian Campbell‘s RBI single, then plated three more runs in the fifth inning when four of the first five batters (Brandon Roberts, Ortega, Kyle Anstice and Josh Greenway) doubled to drive in runs.
KEY STATS
Greenway went 5-8 with three doubles, two runs and six RBI in two games, while Ortega closed the day 4-8 at the plate with two doubles, a homer, four runs and six RBI. Drew Calohan (3-2) pitched six innings with 11 strikeouts to get the game one win, while Carlton Redd (1-0) pitched five innings to earn his first win in the nightcap. Kasey Bottorff had four base hits in two games for Wilmington.
