Carter Bank & Trust Donates More than $27,000 to Non-Profits
MARTINSVILLE – In continuing its reputation of caring for the communities it’s privileged to serve, Carter Bank & Trust (NASDAQ: CARE) donated more than $27,000 to 25 non-profit organizations throughout its footprint in Q3 as part of the Bank’s CARE Forward program.
“Supporting the communities we’re privileged to serve has been a hallmark of Carter Bank & Trust since we were founded in 1974,” Program Manager Kim Simon said. “By helping these 25 non-profit organizations we’re able to help impact the lives of many more people than we could if we went at it alone.”
Through the CARE Forward program, the Bank donates $10 to a local non-profit for each business and personal checking account opened in a branch. For online account openings, donations are made to the American Red Cross. In addition to a monetary investment, Carter Bank associates also invest their time through service engagements with their local CARE Forward nonprofit partner.
Community Health and Wellness is a theme many of the CARE Forward partners share.
Two of those organizations are the Rappahannock Area YMCA in Falmouth and the Culpeper Literacy Council, located in Culpeper.
With four locations in the Fredericksburg-area, the Rappahannock Area YMCA is dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families, and communities. With a mission of putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all, the Rappahannock Area YMCA promotes youth development, healthy living and social responsibility for all.
The donations from CARE Forward will help support the YMCA’s Open Doors program.
“Our Open Doors program serves as the YMCA’s scholarship fund and general support for our five impact programs,” Director of Philanthropy Susan Maida-Church said. “At its core, the Open Doors program gives people access to the Y regardless of the ability to pay. We distribute over $750,000 annually in Open Doors assistance.
“The best part about Open Doors is it doesn’t just apply to memberships. Members can use Open Doors discounts for memberships, programming, such as basketball and swim lessons, wellness/healthcare classes, such as our Diabetes Prevention Program, and our School Aged Child Care (SACC) program.”

Originally started in January of 1987, Culpeper Literacy Council began with a small group of 6 volunteers teaching adult students how to read and to helping high school dropouts study for their GED. In 1989, CLC was established as non-profit and has been a successful resource for adult education for almost 35 years.
The CLC provides classes for students who wish to learn English or learn about United States Citizenship. CLC also provides free one-on-one tutoring to adults who want to learn to read or improve their basic math skills.
The CLC will use money from CARE Forward to help purchase classroom supplies for learners.
“We are getting ready to start our fall quarter, and every new learner will receive a three-ring binder with notebook paper and pencils,” Executive Director Lynn Gore said. “The learners love to keep their classwork and handouts in the notebooks and come to class carrying them every week. Our advanced class is going to take on reading an entire book and doing a book report for our Board of Directors this fall. The generosity of Carter Bank & Trust enabled us to purchase the books for everyone in the class.”
