Bassett Man Among Two Killed in Henry Co. Crash on Route 57

HENRY COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police is investigating a two-vehicle crash that resulted
in two fatalities. The crash occurred Friday, (Nov 5) at 10:06 a.m. on Route 57, one tenth of a
mile west of Route 687 in Henry County.


A 2016 Kia Soul was traveling east on Route 57, when the vehicle crossed the center line and
struck a 1999 Lincoln Town Car head-on.

The Kia was driven by Rico Thadeaus Scales, 34, of Spencer, Va. Mr. Scales was not
wearing his seatbelt and was transported to Atrium Health, Wake Forest Baptist, where he
later died. The passenger, Kimberly D. Lawson, 35, was also injured and transported to a
local hospital; Ms. Lawson was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Lincoln was driven by Bruce Clifton Joyce, 78, of Bassett, Va. Mr. Joyce was wearing his
seatbelt and died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
