VDOT RoadWatch: Work Continues on Windy Gap Following Washout, New Blackwater Bridge to be Completed in November

(UPDATED 8-14-20) * ROUTE 116 CLOSED FOR MUDSLIDE REPAIRS – A section of Route 116 (Jubal Early Highway) in the Coopers Cove area is closed to through traffic.  The road collapsed in the early morning hours on May 22 during prolonged rainfall. Route 116 is a two-lane road and both lanes are closed. The closure is located 1.5 miles east of Route 1520 (Windridge Parkway) and 0.9 mile west of Route 681 (Coopers Cove Road). Traffic can detour around the closure using Route 678 (Truman Hill Road) to Route 635 (Edwardsville Road) to Route 681 (Coopers Cove Road) to return to Route 116. Repairs will include steel rods installation to stabilize the slope, stone and fill to replace the roadbed, guardrail replacement and paving an marking. The work is expected to be completed in September 2020.

(UPDATED 8-14-20) * ROUTE 641 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT – Work to replace the Route 641 (Callaway Road) bridge over the south branch of the Blackwater River is underway. Traffic is reduced to one lane and a temporary signal has been installed to control traffic. Vehicles wider than 9 feet are prohibited. Drivers should expect short delays and changing traffic patterns in the work zone. Estimated completion is late September.

(NEW 8-14-20) * ROUTE 718 PIGG RIVER BRIDGE REPLACEMENT – A section of Route 718 (Colonial Turnpike) is currently closed for a bridge replacement. The bridge is located over the Pigg River, 0.50 mile north of Route 715 (Chestnut Mountain Road) and 1.00 mile south of Route 646 (Doe Run Road). A detour will be in place. The road will be closed until November 2021.

(NEW 8-14-20) * ROUTE 40 PAVING OPERATIONS – Paving is underway on Route 40 from mile marker 38 to 40 at the Pittsylvania/Franklin County line.  A lane closure with flagging operations will be used to direct traffic in the work zone. The completion date is scheduled for August 21, 2020.

(NEW 8-14-20) * ROUTE 602 PAVING OPERATIONS – Paving is underway on Route 602 for north and southbound lanes from mile marker 0 to 1 with a lane closure and flagging operations used to direct traffic in the work zone. The completion date is scheduled for November 20, 2020.

(UPDATED 8-14-20) * CALLAWAY ROAD UTILITY WORK – MMI will be installing fiber optic along Callaway Road from Grassy Hill Road to Bent Mountain Road during daytime hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Motorists should expect shoulder or lane closures for travel in both directions. Intermittent full closures of the highway will be required for periods lasting no longer than 15 minutes.

(UPDATED 7-31-20) * ROUTE 775 CLOSURE – Route 775 (Iron Ridge Road) is closed to traffic as an emergency closure due to a washout. The road will remain closed until further notice.

(UPDATED 2-14-20) * ROUTE 122 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT – Route 122 (Booker T Washington Highway) will be under a flagging operation during daytime hours for a bridge replacement project over Blackwater River. The bridge is located between Route 40 and the intersection with Angle Plantation Road. Drivers can expect some delays for flagging during construction of the new bridge, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. A barrier wall will be in place. The project is expected to be completed in November 2020.
