Walmart in Rocky Mount Evacuated, Suspect in Custody

ROCKY MOUNT – A heavy police presence from both the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and the Rocky Mount Police Department as the Walmart in Rocky Mount was evacuated early Monday afternoon.

According to Sergeant Megan Patterson with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 12:45 p.m. a man called in a report of an active shooter in the store.

Rocky Mount Police and the sheriff’s department responded and cleared the store. No active shooter was found, but a man is in custody, Patterson said, and is believed to be the same man that called the report in.

The Rocky Mount Police Department is working the case.

PRESS RELEASE FROM ROCKY MOUNT POLICE DEPARTMENT —

A false call of an active shooter at the Rocky Mount WalMart has been resolved. An arrest has been made of an unarmed subject in a wooded area near the retail store. The arrested subject called in a false report of an active shooter. The scene is still active but there is no threat to the public. More to come as warranted.

PRESS RELEASE FROM FRANKLIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT —

On Monday, March 2, 2020 at approximately 12:45pm, the Franklin County
Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call in reference to a possible active shooter at Walmart, located at 550 Old Franklin Turnpike, Rocky Mount VA. Rocky Mount.

Police Department were immediately dispatched to the scene. Franklin County Sheriff’s Office assisted. Once on scene, officers could confirm no active shooter but did take one subject into custody.

Rocky Mount Police Department are primary on this incident and any further questions should be referred through them.
