Henry Man Arrested for Soliciting Sex with Minor in Undercover Online Sting

Written by Jamey Singleton. Posted in News

arrestedROCKY MOUNT - A Henry man is being held without bond after being arrested for soliciting sex from what he thought was a 15-year-old girl, the Franklin Co. Sheriff's Department says.

Investigators say Scott Thomas Maul was chatting online with undercover agents posing as a 15-year-old girl and had arrived to meet the girl on August 9. Maul was arrested without incident.

The Sheriff's Department warns parents to keep a lookout on their child's whereabouts online. Apps such as Kik, Omegle, and Snapchat and Facebook Live are all places predators can lure underage children into sending inapropriate pictures or videos to others.

"Sheriff Overton would ask any parent that senses that their children may be at risk to contact the Office of the Sheriff for assistance. Sheriff Overton has dedicated investigation resources to try to protect the children of Franklin county," the sheriff's department said in a news release.

SML Community Attempts to Set New World Record for Longest Floating Human Chain

Written by Jamey Singleton. Posted in News

KindaWorldRecordSMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE - Over 1200 people floated together, joined by their own arms in the 90-degree heat Saturday to set a new Guiness World Record for longest floating human chain.

The event was held at Bernard's Landing at 10 a.m. Saturday. Procedes from the event went to the YMCA.

Organizers say 1257 participants were in the water. Everyone had to bring their own floating device and life jacket for safety.

Officials took video from land and from a helicopter circling overhead and will review the footage to verify if the old record of 634 people floating in a chain was broken. That record was set in Taiwan.
