SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE - Over 1200 people floated together, joined by their own arms in the 90-degree heat Saturday to set a new Guiness World Record for longest floating human chain.
The event was held at Bernard's Landing at 10 a.m. Saturday. Procedes from the event went to the YMCA.
Organizers say 1257 participants were in the water. Everyone had to bring their own floating device and life jacket for safety.
Officials took video from land and from a helicopter circling overhead and will review the footage to verify if the old record of 634 people floating in a chain was broken. That record was set in Taiwan.
