Frances Estelle Austin Sledd, age 70 of Rocky Mount died Saturday, August 9, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Vennie Myrtle Austin; and four siblings, Clinton Austin, James Stafford Austin, Lois Irene Austin, Adelle Woody (Jim). Surviving are her husband, James “Jimmy” Sledd; son, Randy Robertson; daughter-in-law, Christy Robertson; daughter, Lora Sink and husband Brad; grandchildren, Randi Robertson, Nikki Mantei, Eli Sink and girlfriend, Hali Moore; brothers, Larry Austin (Dreama), James Austin “Shorty”, Rodger Austin (Charlotte); sisters, Shirley Franklin, Glenda Peters (Eddie); mother-in-law, Helen Sledd; sister-in-law, Joyce Greer (Roy); and special friend, Mary Thurman. Graveside services will be held at the Jones Family Cemetery (beside Fairview Church of the Brethren) 11 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Eddie Peters and Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. Special thanks to Carilion Hospice of Franklin County especially Kitty Ruby and Joe Grisetti for their care and concern. There will be a private family visitation from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. prior to the service on Thursday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
Eugene Wilson Akers, age 81 of Rocky Mount died Tuesday, August 12, 2014. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Wolton Akers; mother, Louise S. Akers; nephew, Danny M. Brooks; sister-in-law, Judy L. Wood; nieces, Annette Wood and Christie Shively. Eugene is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Ethel L. Akers; sister, Nancy A. Rhodes (Dusty) of Penhook; brother, Selma (Duck) andBrenda A. Akers of Franklin County; uncle, James Caroll (Jim) Akers of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Garnett L. Flora (David), Martha L. Hubbard (Billie) one of Eugene’s best friends, Becky L. Coleman (Rev. Ron); brothers-in-law, Jimmy L. Law (Gail) and Donnie Wood; many nieces and nephews. Eugene was a charter member of the Rocky Mount First Church of the Brethren. When Eugene started in the milk trucking business he had only one truck. When he retired after 35 years he had a fleet of trucks known as Akers Trucking. With hard work and fair treatment to all, Eugene built a successful business. Eugene was loved by all that knew him. He and Ethel loved to travel in their motor home. They went cross county and visited every state but Alaska. He served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany for about a year. Eugene loved and was there for all of his and Ethel’s family. Ethel would like to thank Dr. F. Amos, Lynn Wood, Freddie Peters, Pearl Simmons, family, and Carilion Hospice of Franklin County for the loving care given to Eugene. He will be missed. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Collins and Pastor Ronald Coleman officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in Franklin Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rocky Mount First Church of the Brethren, 405 Tanyard Road, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151. His family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
