Ronald Allen Vanhoesen, age 72 of Rocky Mount died Wednesday December 24, 2014. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service & Crematio Center, Rocky Mount.
Carlton Ledford Hodges, 87 of Rocky Mount born July 9, 1927 passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side, Friday December 26, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Pearlie Hodges and Lucy Mary Bousman, his son, Donnie Carlton Hodges, brothers, Perry Hodges, Albert “Guy” Hodges, Morton “Pete” Hodges and his sister, Christine Hall. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Clara Belle Hudson Hodges, two sons and their wives, Garrett and Connie Hodges, Jimmy and Terry Hodges; two grandchildren Dwayne Hodges and Tanya Young (Robert), one great grandson, Jacob Garrett Young, two brothers, Junior “Bud” Hodges (Rebecca), Glenwood Hodges and one sister, Paige Davis, three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Carlton was dedicated dairy farmer for over 50 years. He was a member of Glade Hill Baptist Church. After surviving prostate cancer, Clara Belle and Carlton spent much time traveling short distances and enjoying each other until he became bed ridden in 2010. Clara Belle was his caregiver until he went to be with the Lord the day after Christmas. The family would like to thank the staff from Franklin County Home Health and Hospice for their help and care. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday at Flora Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
Charles Louis Ross, Jr, 89, of Rocky Mount, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 12, 2014 at the James River Nursing and Convalescent Center in Newport News, Va., following an extended illness. He was born in Ferrum, Va. to the late Charles Louis, Sr and Katherine L. Smith on February 17, 1925. Charles graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1943, was drafted into the army and proudly served his country as an X- Ray technician with the 80th Field Hospital Unit in the European Campaign during WWII from 1943-1946. He attended Virginia Tech and University of Virginia. He married Barbara Anne Richards of the Pleasant Hill community.
A dedicated and loving father and husband, Charles also made many friends throughout the community as a sewing machine sales and service technician and a tinker, trader, big band, zydeco and traditional mountain music fan, especially old time fiddling. One of his greatest joys came through the fellowship with his church, Central Grace Church of Rocky Mount and his beloved family there.
Charles is survived by his wife, Barbara Richards Ross; sister, Mary Frances Goudie of Bassett, Va.; two children: Robert R. Ross, of Hampton, Va. and Lou Anne Ross-Purnell, of Flowery Branch, Ga.; two grandchildren: Betsy R. (David) Payne, of Santa Rita, Guam and Zachery A. Purnell of Atlanta, Ga. ; sister-in-law, Catherine (William) Kingery and brother-in-law, John W. Richards of Rocky Mount; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Central Grace Church in Thanksgiving to God for the life of Charles Ross.
Darlene Annette Smith, age 52 of Rocky Mount reunited with her parents, Levi Thomas and Helen Hodges Law, in heaven on Friday November 14, 2014.She leaves behind a husband, daughter, two grandchildren and many more loved ones who will miss her greatly. Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday November 18,2014 at the Law Family Cemetery with Pastor John Collins officiating. Mom I will carry you with me, till I see you again.
Donnie Wayne Meeks, age 65 of Rocky Mount passed away Saturday November 1, 2014 at his residence. Donnie was preceded in death by his loving father and mother, James JR Meeks and Virginia O. Meeks and an uncle who was like a brother, Bob Overfelt. Surviving are his loving wife of 47 years, Donna M. Meeks, his only daughter, Kim M. Palmer, his grandchildren Brandon Brubaker (Kelli), Ashley Brubaker, Jameylynn Palmer, his great grandchildren, Ayden and Gabriel Brubaker, a very special sister-in-law and brother-in-law Wanda and Joe Ramsey, sister-in-law and husband Lisa and Tim Martin, (aunts who were like sisters) Shirley James (Paul), Mary Mullins and Marie Overfelt, his uncles Wilburn Meeks, Albert Meeks, Shelbourne Meeks, Edward Meeks and many cousins. The family respectfully request no food. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday at Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wilburn Meeks officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
