James W. Keene, age 60 of Callaway left this world Saturday, March 14, 2015 for a long deserved rest after a five year battle with cancer. He was a 1973 graduate of Richlands High School and Tazewell Vocational Center where he majored in Masonry. He was the son of the late Clyde and Agnes Dales Keene, Tazewell County natives. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Donna Hope Keene, a son Richard Nathan Keene and fiancé Sherry Crews of Gretna, Va. a daughter, Wendy Heather Hollandsworth and husband Marty of Bassett, Va. five grandchildren, Makayla Faith Keene, and Emily Grace Keene both of Callaway, Va. Dustin James Keene, Shawn Pierre Crews and Brandon Scott Dalton all of Gretna, Va. one sister, Betty Hughes and husband Edward of Doran, Va. one brother, Clyde Keene, Jr. and wife Kelly of Abington, Va., special friends Howard Lowe, Jr., Sam Jones, Grace Jones and Ronnie Caldwell. Memorial services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Flora Funeral Chapel with the family receiving friends 1 hour prior to service. Page Alfred Matherly, age 81, of the Snow Creek Community Penhook, VA, departed his earthly life on Thursday, March 12, 2015. Born October 24, 1933 to the late Roy and Hopie Catherine Matherly, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Chandler Dale Matherly; four brothers, J.B, Carroll (Blue), Raymond & George; and two sisters, Estelle Oakes & Rebecca Pagans. Page was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Aleise Hogan Matherly of the home; one son, Dale Matherly (Brenda); four daughters, Patsy Becker, Betty Pagans (Danny), Pam Love (Josh) and Amy Layman; seven grandchildren, Cory Purcell, Matthew Pagans, Amanda Price, Dylan Layman, Eryn Layman, Dawsyn Layman and Rylee Layman; two great-grandchildren, Ava Price and Luke Pagans; one sister, Joan Dyches; and two brothers, Ronald & Gerald. Page was a lifetime member of Forrest Hill Christian Church. He retired from DuPont after 31 years of service and was also into farming most his life. He was very active in his community serving on the Franklin County Board of Supervisors for the Snow Creek District fourteen years. Page thought it a privilege to help his fellow man and has received awards and a Certificate of Honor for his years of commitment to Franklin County and the Commonwealth of VA. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The Matherly family is in the care of Flora Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. Visitation will be at Forrest Hill Christian Church on Saturday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the church, Wayne Keith, Minister, presiding. Joseph David Thornton, 96, of College Park, MD passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Washington Adventist Hospital, Takoma Park, MD. He was born on October 7, 1918 in Museville, VA to the lateCharles P. Thornton and Belle Jefferson Thornton. He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle Lawrence Thornton; brothers, Renford, Larry, Henry Cabot and Everett; along with a sister, Lizzie Mahan. He is survived by his two sons, Wilbur and his wife Joanne of Fairport, NY, Jeffrey and his wife Janet of Lanham, MD; and a daughter, Patricia Figard and her husband Barry of Clarksville, MD. He also is survived by five grandchildre and five great-grandchildren. Joseph was a 60 year member of Berwyn Baptist Church, College Park MD. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Holder. After the war he continued US government employment with the Naval Department at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, White Oak, MD, retiring in 1978. Visitation will be heldat Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount VA on Monday, March 16, at 1:00 PM with services following at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at the Lawrence-Adkins Cemetery. Lucille Adkins Campbell, age 77 of Rocky Mount passed away Monday March 9, 2015 at Red Oak Manor. She was born January 7, 1938 in Pittsylvania County, to Charlie L. and Ruby Meadows Adkins. She is survived by her two sons, Tim (Jennifer) Pagans and Tom Pagans. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Kathryn A. Mills of Greensboro, NC, Ann (Tommy) Roberson, Peggy (Gerald) Dalton of Rocky Mount, special friend, Percell Brown of Bedford, nephews, Sonny and Scott Mills, Glen Dalton, special nephew, Greg Dalton. Special thanks to Red Oak Manor Staff for their care. Memorial services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Tanyard Village Apartments with Pastor Ron Coleman officiating. Paul Neice, Jr., age 65 of Glade Hill died Friday, March 6, 2015. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Neice, Sr. Surviving are his mother, Myrtle L. Neice; daughter, Pauletta; brothers, Richard, Roger (Barbara), Eddie, Mike and Andy Neice; sisters, Gladys Wright (Billie), Shelia Neice, Ruth Neice (fiancé, Rex Burrus), Ruby Peters (Jay); numerous nieces and nephews. Paul was a United States Army Veteran of Vietnam. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. David Long officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
