Charles Louis Ross, Jr.

Charles Louis Ross, Jr, 89, of Rocky Mount, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 12, 2014  at the James River Nursing and Convalescent Center in Newport News, Va., following  an extended illness. He was born in Ferrum, Va. to the late Charles Louis, Sr and Katherine L. Smith on February 17, 1925.  Charles graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1943, was drafted into the army and proudly served his country as an X- Ray technician with the  80th Field Hospital Unit in the European Campaign during WWII from 1943-1946.   He attended Virginia Tech and University of Virginia. He married Barbara Anne Richards of the Pleasant Hill community.

A dedicated and loving father and husband, Charles also made many friends throughout the community as a sewing machine sales and service technician and a tinker, trader, big band, zydeco and traditional mountain music  fan, especially old time fiddling.  One of his greatest joys came through the fellowship with his church, Central Grace Church of Rocky Mount and his beloved family there.

Charles is survived by his wife, Barbara Richards Ross; sister,  Mary Frances Goudie of Bassett, Va.;  two children: Robert R. Ross, of Hampton, Va.  and Lou Anne Ross-Purnell, of Flowery Branch, Ga.;  two grandchildren: Betsy R. (David) Payne, of Santa Rita, Guam and Zachery A. Purnell of Atlanta, Ga. ; sister-in-law,  Catherine (William) Kingery and brother-in-law,  John W. Richards of Rocky Mount; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Central Grace Church in Thanksgiving to God for the life of Charles Ross.

Darlene Smith

Darlene Annette Smith, age 52 of Rocky Mount reunited with her parents, Levi Thomas and Helen Hodges Law, in heaven on Friday November 14, 2014.She leaves behind a husband, daughter, two grandchildren and many more loved ones who will miss her greatly. Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday November 18,2014 at the Law Family Cemetery with Pastor John Collins officiating. Mom I will carry you with me, till I see you again.

Donnie Wayne Meeks

Donnie Wayne Meeks, age 65 of Rocky Mount passed away Saturday November 1, 2014 at his residence. Donnie was preceded in death by his loving father and mother, James JR Meeks and Virginia O. Meeks and an uncle who was like a brother, Bob Overfelt. Surviving are his loving wife of 47 years, Donna M. Meeks, his only daughter, Kim M. Palmer, his grandchildren Brandon Brubaker (Kelli), Ashley Brubaker, Jameylynn Palmer, his great grandchildren, Ayden and Gabriel Brubaker, a very special sister-in-law and brother-in-law Wanda and Joe Ramsey, sister-in-law and husband Lisa and Tim Martin, (aunts who were like sisters) Shirley James (Paul), Mary Mullins and Marie Overfelt, his uncles Wilburn Meeks, Albert Meeks, Shelbourne Meeks, Edward Meeks and many cousins. The family respectfully request no food. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday at Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wilburn Meeks officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. D.M. Layman, Jr.

D.M. Layman, Jr., age 85 of Wirtz went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 28, 2014. He was the son of Dee Morton and Lydia (Peters) Layman and was born June 18, 1929. He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized into the Old German Baptist Brethren Church April 1942 to which he remained faithful. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Etheleen (Dillon) Layman; three sons and two daughters, Richard and wife Peggy Layman of Covington, OH, Kenneth and wife Brenda Layman of Wirtz, Patricia and husband Donald Brubaker of Rocky Mount, Barbara L. Yarber of Durham, NC, Harold and wife Theresa Layman of Wirtz; 14 grandchildren; 36 great- grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-step-grandchildren; sister, Marie Filburn of Pendleton, IN; sister-in-law, Dorothy Layman of Wirtz; brother-in- law, Frances Lair of New Carlisle, OH. He loved his family. Preceding him in death are three brothers and spouses; Ezra Layman, Paul Layman (Helen), Bill Layman (Mildred); three sisters and spouses, Orpha Austin (Alfred), Reva Rumble (Lawrence), Glenna Lair; one brother-in-law; one still born brother. Our special thanks to his caregivers, Judea (Penny) Williams and Theresa Layman. Junior’s occupations were a part-time farmer and full-time for 42 years at Walker Machine Foundry in Roanoke. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, basket weaving, and woodworking. He was also a bus driver for Franklin County Public Schools. Funeral services will be held at Oak Hill Old German Baptist Brethren Church 10 a.m. Thursday with the Home Brethren officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family request that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to Carilion Hospice, American Alzheimer’s Association or Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. His family will receive friends 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Church, (101 Elam Lane, Boones Mill, VA 24065) Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.

Carrington Holloway

Carrington HollowayCarrington Holloway, age 77 of Rocky Mount died Friday, October 24, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Sue Holloway; parents, John and Annie May Holloway; brothers and sister, John Henry Holloway, George Thomas Holloway, William Holloway and Elizabeth Holloway. Surviving are his children, Cindy Blackwell (Kenneth), James Michael Holloway (Vickie), Jeffrey Holloway (Martha), Anthony Holloway and friend, Wanda, Mark Dwayne Holloway; grandchildren, Michaela, Daniel, Cory, Cole, Krystal, Chelsea (Nick), Koby (Koby’s Mother, Lisa Levisy); great-grandson, Kaleb; sister-in-law, Judy Holloway; many nieces and nephews including Linda and Ronnie Altice; other family members and friends. Memorial services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Ronald Coleman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice or Henry Fork Church of the Brethren. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
