Joseph Lenwood Sink, age 99 ½, June 17, 1919 – February 2, 2019 passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ira Benjamin and Della Wray Sink, two brothers, James Wray Sink and Robert Carl Sink, his wife of almost 60 years, Audrey Hudson Sink, one son, Robert Benjamin Sink, and one daughter, Sandra Jo Sink. Left to cherish his memory are his loving daughter Lynn Sink Allen, and three precious grandchildren, Kendall Leigh Allen, Lauren Davis Allen, and William Benjamin Allen. Also surviving are one sister-in-law, Edith Sink, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was part of the greatest generation, he landed on Omaha Beach during D-Day and survived many battles as an army tank sergeant. He received five battle stars during his war career. He came home after the war and started working for the Norfolk and Western Railway as an engineer while also maintaining his beloved farm/homeplace. Joe was a member of the Virginia Freemasons for 73 years. He was the oldest member at Rocky Mount Baptist Church
and served in many areas in the church. Joe will always be remembered for his infectious smile and easygoing nature. He always had time for his friends and family.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 12 p.m. by the church’s pastor, David Slayton at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, 85 W Church St, Rocky Mount, VA 24151. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral arrangements and cremation are being handled by Flora Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project to help other veterans in their time of need.
