Herman Grey "Butch" Bryant, Jr.

Herman Grey "Butch" Bryant, Jr. of Henry, Virginia passed away at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the age of 78. He was born on October 25, 1939 at his home place in Henry, the first child of the late Herman Grey Bryant and Frances Martin Bryant. Butch graduated from Franklin County High School in 1957 where he played on the football team as center and place kicker. Butch earned a BA and PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Virginia, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa. Butch began his career at Celanese in Louisville, KY, and then worked at Liggett & Meyers Tobacco Company in Durham, NC, Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company in Louisville, KY and Swedish Match in Owensboro, KY. Over his career, Butch developed 17 U.S. patents. Upon his retirement in 2000, he moved back to Henry to build a home and to take care of his parents. In addition to his parents, he took care of and was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Patricia Greene Bryant. He was a member and Elder of the Rocky Mount Presbyterian Church in Virginia. He is survived by his two children, Elizabeth Renee Bryant of Henry, Virginia, and Michael Grey Bryant and his wife Alyssa Glaser Bryant of Atlanta, Georgia. He has two grandchildren, Michael Grey Bryant, Jr. of New York City, and Christopher O'Connor Bryant of Atlanta, Georgia. Butch is also survived by his brother, James Robert Bryant and his wife Charlotte of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister-in- law, Joyce Greene Woods of Roanoke, VA; brother-in- law, Jerry Greene and his wife Gaye Clingenpeel Greene of Callaway, VA; cousin, Joe Philpott and his wife Joy of Philpott, VA; cousins, Glenn Bryant and Mary Jo Bryant of Cincinnati, OH; cousin, Walter Bryant and his wife Dale of Denmark, SC; cousin, Chester Bryant and his wife Margaret Ann of
Greensboro, NC; cousin, Susan Southern of Greensboro, NC; William Collins and his wife Sue of Beaufort, SC; Sammy Collins and his wife Janeise of Collinsville, VA. He is also survived by many caring nieces and nephews. Thank you to our caregivers, Melissa Hodges, Patty Hodges, and Leigh Prom.
