Hurricane Florence Forces Cancellations

FLOWEBFRANKLIN COUNTY - With the threat of Hurricane Florence moving into the area this weekend, many local organizations have cancelled or postponed their events.

The Franklin County High School Varsity football game against Hidden Valley has been moved up to Thursday evening at Bogle Field in Cave Spring. Kick off is at 5:30 p.m.

Ferrum College has closed the school as of 1:55 p.m. Wednesday. All athletic practices and games home and away have been postponed, including the Ferrum football game at Averett.

The BRASCA walk-a-thon scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, has been cancelled. A new date will be announced in the future.

The Booker T. Washington park will be closed this weekend. This also cancels the Harvest Time event that was scheduled for Saturday. The park could be closed additional days, depending on the weather conditions.

The strongest impacts locally from Hurricane Florence will likely arrive later in the weekend, with Sunday, Monday and possibly Tuesday being the time to watch for heavy rain, torrential downpours, isolated tornadoes, 40 mph winds at times, and dangerous flooding along with mudslides. Some power outages are possible.

Most areas will get 2-6" of rain into next week, most of which falls after Sunday.
