familypharmacyCOLLINSVILLE - The owner of a local pharmacy with a location in Rocky Mount pleaded guilty Thursday for not paying employment taxes, court records show.

Jerry R. Harper, Jr. 61, owned and operated Family Discount Pharmacy, Inc. (FDP) in Stanleytown with locations in Stuart, Rocky Mount, Chatham, and Brosville, VA.

The U.S. Department of Taxation says Harper withheld $5 million in employee taxes from 1998 to 2014, but did not pay the money to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Instead, Harper admitted he used the money to pay personal expenses including over $1 million wired to his personal bank account, $500,000 in stock market investments, and $100,000 on his son's pharmacy school tuition.

Harper also purchased $370,000 of property in Virginia and North Carolina. He also used the money to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a jet ski, according to a press release.

Harper will be sentenced October 26, 2018 and could face up to 10 years in prison, supervised release, restitution and financial penalties.
