libraryROCKY MOUNT - On September 9, 2017, 11:00 a.m., the Main Branch of the Franklin County Public Library will hold a ribbon cutting for the Library’s mascot, Shelly. Shelly, a red eared slider turtle that resides on the Main Library’s second floor, had outgrown her tank and needed habitat improvements to ensure her health.

As his Eagle Scout Service Project, Ryan Maxey, 16, oversaw Shelly’s move to a new tank with state-of- the-art habitat. A senior at Franklin County High School, Ryan presented before Franklin County’s Director of Facilities/Special Projects to approve the tank’s safety and stability, constructed a stand for the new tank and secured donations.

“Shelly’s habitat improvement project was complicated,” said Christine Arena, Coordinator of Programming & Outreach for the Main Library. “Ryan researched the technical requirements of
aquariums and the habitat needs of turtles. Over the project’s duration of seven months, Ryan managed each phase from conception to completion.”

Funded by donated money, supplies, time and expertise, Shelly’s habitat project was financially supported by the Friends of the Main Library, Boy Scouts Troop #129 with families and friends,
and Library patrons and visitors. Mill Mountain Zoo, Roanoke, Va. and Thompson & Litton, an engineering firm in Radford, Va., provided technical consultation. Capps Home Building Center, Moneta, Va., and Franklin Glass, Rocky Mount, Va., provided tools and materials.

The ribbon cutting, open to the public, is September 9, 2017, 11:00 a.m., at the Franklin County Library-Main Branch. Ryan Maxey will be the lead speaker. Free refreshments provided by The Whole Bean, Rocky Mount. The book sale is the same day, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For information: Christine Arena, Coordinator of Programming & Outreach, Franklin County Public
