Rocky Mount Woman Killed in Crash on 220

FRANKLIN COUNTY – State police say a woman was killed and two others injured in a crash on Route 220 Tuesday afternoon.

Jean Young Mattox, 86, of Rocky Mount was killed in the crash at the intersection of Route 220 and Route 615, state police say.

A 2005 Ford Taurus, driven by Irene Young Shively of Rocky Mount was traveling south on Route 220 and failed to yield the right of way while making a left turn onto Route 615, police say. The Ford was hit by a 2014 Buick Regal traveling north.

Mattox was the passenger in the Ford and was wearing her seatbelt, police say. She was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she later died.

Shively was wearing her seatbelt and injured.

The driver of the Buick, Oliver L. Steiner, 69, of Rocky Mount was wearing his seatbelt and transported from the scene for his injuries.

The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called to assist in the crash, which remains under investigation.
