Brush Fire Burns One-Acre in Burnt Chimney

BURNT CHIMNEY – Firefighters blame open burning on a brush fire that burned around one acre of land and woods last Saturday, March 16.

Firefighters were dispatched around 6:05 p.m to the Teaberry Loop Road area of Route 116, where they found a fire spreading quickly into nearby woods.

Crews were able to knock most of the fire out within 20 minutes, but stayed another hour and a half to perform “mop-up” operations. The fire was fully extinguished a hour and a half later.

Several units responded to the scene.

The brush fire comes after recent dry weather coupled with low humidity and breezy conditions.

Virginia State Law prohibits open burning before 4 p.m. through April 30 each Spring. Even after the 4 p.m., people are encouraged not to burn on especially dry and breezy days, especially if burning near brush and/or nearby woods.
