Ferrum’s Ortega Named ODAC Baseball Player of the Week


his is Ortega’s and Ferrum’s first ever ODAC Baseball Player of the Week honor.

FERRUM, Va. — Ferrum College junior catcher Tim Ortega has been named Baseball Player of the Week by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for his performance in three games last week. This is Ferrum’s first ever spring sports ODAC Player of the Week honor.

In three games, Ortage batted .692 with a double, a triple, two home runs, seven runs scored and six RBI.

The junior from Bluffton, South Carolina, went 4-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs and two RBI in Ferrum’s 5-0 win over Averett University March 5 at home. Ortega went 4-for-5 with a triple, homer, three runs and two RBI in game one of an ODAC doubleheader March 10 at Eastern Mennonite University, then went 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the nightcap, a 14-8 win.

Ortega currently leads the team in batting average (.436), home runs (5), RBI (20), hits (24), on-base percentage (.529) and slugging percentage (.836).

The Panthers return to action Saturday, March 16, at home against Bridgewater College. The ODAC doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at Panther Field. Coach Ryan Brittle’s team brings an 11-5 overall record, 4-0 ODAC mark and a seven-game win streak into the weekend.
